TargetPoint Re-Launches MI Capitol Caucus
An Insiders’ Look at Politics in the Great Lakes State
TargetPoint along with its Partners Kolt Communications and Sterling Corporation have released the first findings in 2010 from their Capitol Caucus (full press release here). This poll of Lansing’s political elite shows Attorney General Mike Cox and Congressman Pete Hoekstra with the early lead for the GOP nomination. They are followed by Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard and businessman Rick Snyder. This generally reflects the public polling in the race, except these insiders are giving a great deal more weight to Snyder’s millions that are just now coming into play. Despite only polling at 2%, Snyder is given nearly equal chance of winning the nomination as Bouchard, who has already run once statewide and has been a presence in Michigan politics for nearly two decades.
Who the Republicans will face is much more open question. At this point, there is no consensus candidate, but rather a handful of options for the Democrats to consider with 4 candidates being given a roughly equal shot at securing the nomination. Speaker of the House Andy Dillon leads the pack, but is closely trailed by Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, businesswoman Denise Illitch. Also right in the hunt, somewhat surprisingly, is former State Treasurer Bob Bowman who currently has one of the world’s dream jobs in running major league baseball and lives in Connecticut, while maintaining a home in Michigan.
Looking at November, the bi-partisan panel is fairly pessimistic, giving Democrats only a 38% chance of maintaining the Governor’s office after 8 years of the Granholm administration.
